台灣的Sony各位就別指望了,

是家針對優秀唱片自行復刻的公司,
最近他們發表一張由Casadesus與van Beinum合作的貝多芬協奏曲錄音,
該唱片完成於1959年,是van Beinum最後的商業錄音,
不到一個月後,van Beinum即因心臟病猝死。
Casadesus演出的貝多芬協奏曲不多見,
第五號過去已見CD出版,第一、第四恐怕是首度CD發行。

The recorded legacy
Robert Casadesus made many records but there are notable gaps in his discography. Although he set down a fair amount of Debussy, Columbia forbade him to record the Études because in the 1950s they were considered too abstruse. He was a founding member of the Couperin Society but left us nothing by this composer. Of Schubert, a composer he loved and often performed, there are the A major Sonata, D664, with eight of the L<ndler, D790 (Dante CD HPC087) and two works for piano four hands with Gaby (Sony CD 5033982). Of Ravel, there is a treasure trove of solo material but of the two concertos, only that for the left hand, which he did twice – many of his records, whether of Mozart or Saint-Sa<ns, were duplicated, because Columbia wanted a proven seller revamped in the latest sound technique. Some recordings remain private, such as Casadesus accompanying his cousin Jacqueline Pianavia de Courville in songs by Falla, around 1950. Like his excellent recording of Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain from 1957, with Mitropoulos and the NYPSO (CD 5033952), this recital reflects the pianist's admiration for the composer. He only rarely served as a vocal accompanist, as in a hastily recorded Schumann Dichterliebe with baritone Pierre Bernac in 1952 (CD 5033942).

A Piano Masters disc includes Chopin's Ballades and an emotionally large-scale version of Schumann's Études symphoniques recorded in 1928-30 (Pearl CD GEM0068). The Chopin pieces are notable for their purity, simplicity and rhythmic sensitivity, never overstated. The Études reveal mature, confident, fully formed artistry – Casadesus would record them twice more, in 1950 (Am. Col. LP ML5146) and 1960 (CD 5033942) with equally fine results. The young lion may also be heard in an admirably unadorned and direct Debussy Cello Sonata from 1930, with Maurice Mar<chal (Pearl CD GEMMCD9348; CD 150072). From 1935 come Faur<'s F sharp minor Impromptu, Op. 102, D minor Pr<lude, Op. 103, and CD minor Piano Quartet with members of the Quatuor Calvet (CD 150072). Live performances of concertos from 1936 and 1938 can be heard, accompanied by the NYPSO under John Barbirolli (APR CD APR5601). Mozart's A major, K488, Weber's Konzertst<ck and Franck's Symphonic Variations are precious documents, despite inadequate sound. The Mozart is widely contrasted, with a spacious Andante and dashing Presto. Casadesus captures the tragedy of the Franck and the Northern poetry in the Weber, despite Barbirolli's somewhat sketchy accompaniments. Casadesus also did the Konzertst<ck twice in the studio, in 1935 with an orchestra led by Eug<ne Bigot (CD HPC081) and in 1952 with George Szell and the Clevelanders (Sony CD in preparation).

In a Franck Sonata from 1946-7 with his dapper compatriot Zino Francescatti (CD GEMMCD9250; Sony CD SM2K61722), Casadesus shows himself to be the perfect companion, tactfully supporting the violinist yet everywhere revealing contained inner strength and subtle musicality. with Other essential performances with Francescatti are Faur<'s Sonatas from 1953 and Chausson's Concerto with the Guilet Quartet from 1954 (CD SM2K61722). All these treasures are returning in the Casadesus Edition, along with the Debussy Sonata from 1946 – a live 1963 performance of this work is now deleted (Vogue CD 672010). And speaking of Debussy, the Second Book of Pr<ludes from 1945 is available on an interesting recital (Cascavelle CD VEL2012); the later 1954 version will be included, along with the First Book from 1953 and much besides, in an all-Debussy album in the Edition.

Toreador-style Ravel
A two-disc selection of 1947-61 recordings for the Great Pianists of the 20th Century series (Philips CD 456 739-2) contains works by Rameau, Bach, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Debussy, Faur< and Ravel. Casadesus's Rameau from 1952 is vivid, with noble agility, especially in Le rappel des oiseaux. His Bach French Suite in E, BWV817, from 1951 is brisk and joyous, open-hearted in a way akin to Arthur Loesser's Bach. Incidentally in 1958 he recorded the Second Partita, BWV826, E minor Toccata, BWV914, and Italian Concerto; and with Francescatti he twice set down the Violin Sonata in A, BWV1015 – both versions were unpublished, apart from a limited LP edition of the 1954 one, but the 1947 performance has now been issued with all the other Bach (CD 5033832). Continuing with the Philips set, the handful of Scarlatti Sonatas from 1952 seem a little hasty and generic; but Beethoven's Sonata in A, Op. 2 No. 2, is spry, with a sense of that composer's dark wit. Gaby joins Robert in Debussy's En blanc et noir and Faur<'s Dolly Suite, from 1963 and 1959 respectively. Both are enchanting, with the Debussy – despite its black-and-white title – showing a Technicolor sweep, while the Faur< is a touchingly tender domestic dialogue. Faur< solo pieces from 1951 – three of the Pr<ludes, Op. 103, the Nocturne No. 7, Op. 74, Barcarolle No. 5, Op. 66, and Impromptu No. 5, Op. 102 – have an intriguing ecclesiastical or spiritual aura. Casadesus's famous Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand from 1947, with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, is a great emotive event. When Carlos Chavez conducted for Casadesus in a performance of this Concerto in Mexico, he played as an encore a fanfare usually played in tribute to a victorious bullfighter; and Casadesus does indeed have a toreador's panache in this work. It is in marginally less good sound here than on the two-disc set mislabelled as the complete piano music of Ravel (Sony CD MH2K63316, 5033892).

In this Ravel album, containing recordings from 1946-51, deep love for the music gleams everywhere. Casadesus allows muscle to show, however, even in such delicate pieces as Pavane pour une infante defunte. The Sonatine from 1951 is hardly different from one recorded in 1940 (CD GEM0068). One of the reasons he was an ideal Ravel pianist was that he mastered the technical challenges of a work such as Miroirs but also entered Ravel's poetic universe. In Ma M<re l'Oye from 1951, with Gaby, he expressed a world of childhood enchantment with simplicity and poetry. His Jeux d'eau from 1951, like his 1928 version, is a humanely burbling fountain, closer to a human voice than many recorded interpretations. Among other 1951 performances, his Menuet sur le nom d'Haydn is unsentimental and uptempo, Valses nobles et sentimentales shows rumbustious high spirits and Gaspard de la nuit has a brilliant use of silence, as part of an intensely dramatic imagination. This Gaspard makes me wish he had recorded more Liszt, the Sonata at least, and not just a 1952 rendition of the Second Concerto with George Szell and the Clevelanders (Sony CD in preparation).

A dashingly fluent and rapid live version of the Second Concerto comes on an invaluable CD, published by a Swiss label, of Casadesus's radio recordings with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Ernest Ansermet from 1957-58. It also contains a majestic account of Mozart's D major Coronation Concerto, K537, and a spiky Nights in the Gardens of Spain (Cascavelle CD VEL2008). There is a charming interview about Ansermet with Casadesus which reveals him to have been a vivid, highly dramatic raconteur.
Sony has included some Casadesus performances in the Essential Classics series, although sometimes omitting basic discographical documentation. A disc of Beethoven sonatas (CD SBK46345) features a somewhat muted, subdued Moonlight and more persuasive readings of Les Adieux and 'A Therese', Op. 78, both sober and moving in their noble restraint. These are from 1957 but the album's stunner is from 1952, an Appassionata with a grasp of rhetoric and inner rhythms, as if the soloist were reciting great poetry. All of these are also on a newly remastered two-disc set which brings Op. 110 to CD for the first time (CD 5033932)

Half of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas were recorded in mono with Francescatti and it would be good to have them on CD. The complete cycle that the friends taped in stereo has come out twice: on three separate discs which in France were slipcased for the series 'Les Absolus' (CD SM3K64117) and now as a boxed set in the Edition (CD 5033912). I am most conversant with those on the Essential Classics release (CD SBK46342). The Spring from 1961 has less of the torrents of nature to be heard in the live Szigeti/Schnabel version from 1948 but the Frenchmen play radiantly, reminding us that the work's key message is joy. From 1958 come a sweetly serene, almost Schubertian, Op. 96 and a deliberately unmonumental Kreutzer, which a meditative Casadesus plays as a cousin of the philosophical G major Concerto. It is a coherent Kreutzer, lacking some of the thrills and chills of the Szigeti/Bart<k live recording of 1940 but definitely one to live with. It whets the appetite for a reprint of Casadesus's interpretations of the G major Concerto from 1947 with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphians (LP ML4074). His 1959 version with the Concertgebouw Orkest under Eduard van Beinum is promised in the Edition, along with the First Concerto from the same sessions. Casadesus also made two recordings of the Emperor: with Mitropoulos and the NYPSO in 1955 (CD 5033952) and with Hans Rosbaud at the Concertgebouw in 1961 (Philips CD 426 06-2).

Radiant tone
A couple of Essential Classics CDs contain recordings by Casadesus among a grab-bag of other artists. A Franck orchestral programme is blessed with a poignant 1958 version of the Symphonic Variations, with Ormandy and the Philadelphians, noteworthy for the pianist's strength and radiant tone (CD SBK60287). By contrast, a 1960 Papillons of Schumann, although cleanly articulated and heroic, suffers from a harsh sound quality (CD SBK68345). Sony has now issued an all-Schumann album containing one of the two versions of Waldszenen, the Fantasy, Carnaval, Papillons, Dichterliebe and F sharp Romance (CD 5033942).
Happily a 1961 reading of Faur<'s Ballade, Op. 19, with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, has consistently been available (CD SMK47548, SM2K61725). It is a bel canto performance, with ravishing legato and a sense of breathing – the pianist's ideal. Another Bernstein/Casadesus collaboration, on Saint-Sa<ns's Fourth Concerto from 1961, is being brought back with it in the Edition. A 1945 version of the Saint-Sa<ns, with the NYPSO led by Artur Rodzinski (LP ML4246), would surely merit a reprint.

An album of Bach concertos for two and three keyboards (CD SBK67179) is only partly satisfying. Despite the pleasure of hearing Robert, Gaby and Jean Casadesus play in an ensemble, the opaque quality of even the deftest piano hampers these performances. Two of the concertos, moreover, are from 1967, accompanied by the ungainly Zurich CO under Edmond de Stoutz, and are a near-total loss. The concertos for three keyboards, accompanied by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Orchestre des Concerts Colonne conducted by Pierre Dervaux, are better but still not as valuable as the solo Bach.
Our view of Casadesus's legendary Mozart interpretations has mostly been restricted to the well-known sessions with George Szell's Cleveland Orchestra; and these performances are coming out yet again in the Edition. Casadesus tends to sound less emotive in the stereo recordings from this series than in earlier versions with other conductors – or Szell himself. At least, along with the concertos, the Edition restores the solo sonatas K332, K457 and K576 – they were high on my desert island list of reprints – and the Sonata for two pianos, K448, with Gaby is back (CD 5033982), as is the Quintet for piano and winds, K452 (CD 5033882). The most appealing evidence of the pianist's way with this composer has appeared only recently: the Concertos K491 and K595 with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted respectively by Dimitri Mitropoulos in 1956 and Carl Schuricht in 1961 (Orfeo CD C536 001).

An intimate, philosophical, chamber music approach expresses the full emotionality of the music. The B flat Concerto with Schuricht is really a marvel of cohesion. A transfer of the 1937 version of the CD minor Concerto, K491, conducted by Bigot, may still be found if you are lucky (CD HPC081); like the 1954 Szell/Cleveland version (LP ML4901) it is far more vigorous and involved than the much-reissued 1961 attempt.
We still need reissues of such interpretations as Milhaud's Le Bal Martiniquais for two pianos from 1945, with Gaby (6 71831D), Satie's Trois morceaux en forme de poire from 1946, also with Gaby (LP ML4246) – only the later version of the Satie has appeared (CD SM2K61725) – and various other early documents of Robert Casadesus. As it is, many more of his majestic recordings are available than was the case even a year ago, so that listeners can now have a reasonable view of his true achievement.
