By the age of 57, most artists might consider slowing down the pace of their career. However, in the case of Nelson Freire, nothing could be further from the truth. As Decca proudly announces the exclusive signing of the Brazilian pianist, Freire now feels that he has something very personal to say about Chopin.
Although considered a genius within the piano cognoscenti, Freire is mysteriously undiscovered by the general public. "I first heard him in France a few years ago and was astounded at the sparkle and depth of his music making", enthuses Jean-Hugues Allard, Vice-President of Artists and Repertoire. "Nelson has been concentrating on his music making for many years in an unassuming manner. He has never aggressively sought the limelight in his career; rather he has focused on developing musically with friends, such as Martha Argerich. He has quietly grown into a grand master with great integrity".

For his first album under contract, Freire is currently recording an accessible solo Chopin programme which includes: Sonata in B minor, op.58; the Études op.25 and Trois Nouvelles Études. "It is inside the core repertoire that we actually have the most to discover", Allard continues. "With a repertoire which ranges from Bach to Lutoslawsky, Nelson Freire believes that now is the right time for him to record these particular Chopin works. He feels he has the maturity to say something different. I believe him. Nelson can make each finger sing, producing an original spectrum of colours on the piano. He takes the score and makes it his. It is almost as though he is re-composing the music as he plays. This Chopin recording will be an entirely fresh approach to standard piano repertoire".

Freire這位擁有超絕技巧的鋼琴家
一直沒有引起太多人的注意
但他早年錄下的柴一(with Kempe,Munich PO,CBS)
其熱情和強勁快速的八度音
令人印象深刻

他的唱片在台灣不容易買
CBS還有同樣是和Kempe合作的舒曼，葛利格協奏曲
但目前國內都已絕跡
除了幾張和Argerich合作的雙鋼琴錄音外
較易買到的就是Philips的20世紀鋼琴家系列
和Audiofon出版的1984年在Miami獨奏會
SONY Essential有一張他彈的Chopin 24首前奏曲op.28
但很不易引起大家注意
這些唱片都頗能代表Freire的藝術成就

Berlin Classics有一張Liszt 協奏曲1+2號
Plasson指揮Dresren
也是很高水準的演奏
其他還有一些小廠的錄音
但只能從網路上購得
